School Library Media Practicum Procedures
Practicum Sites
Each candidate needs to identify three sites where you will complete your practicum. All three sites must have certified school library media specialists who are available to supervise your field activities. The three sites need to represent the three different K12 levels (elementary, middle school, and high school). One site will be the primary site. The media specialist at the primary site will be considered the site supervising media specialist and will complete the site supervisor feedback form to evaluate the candidate's performance. The other two secondary sites should be schools at different grade levels. Please go to the Forms page to download Practicum Site forms.
Please note that if you are a classroom teacher, it is your responsibility to meet with your school administrator the semester before practicum in order to discuss practicum requirements and any additional permissions or placement requests that your county has in place.
Graduate students who are not currently employed by a Georgia school system in which they plan to complete the Practicum, may not contact a Georgia school site directly to arrange a field placement in order to complete graduate course requirements. If this describes you, please download the Graduate Field Placement Request form and follow the form directions to secure a placement. Send the completed electronic version to your practicum university supervisor through your Georgia Southern email account.
It is in your best interest to fill out and submit this form one semester before your intention to complete the practicum. Failure to do so may delay your placement. If you live in a state other than Georgia, you are responsible for arranging your own field placements.
Practicum Hours for FRIT 7734 |
|
The total practicum hour requirement is 150 hours. The candidate will spend a minimum of 90 hours (74 hours at the primary site, 8 hours each at the secondary and tertiary sites) in a Media Center under the direct supervision of a certified school library media specialist. Up to 10 hours are budgeted for planning activities (i.e. collaborating with a teacher). Hours spent completing required activities listed on this syllabus (i.e. processing materials) can be counted toward meeting the 10 hour planning requirement. The remaining 50 hours come from the key assessments candidates have already completed. These are listed below:
Key Assessments
- Instructional Design in FRIT 7231
- Strategic Management Plan in FRIT 7331
- Online Learning Module in FRIT 7235
Again, completion of key assessments count for hours toward your total 150 hour requirement. Artifacts from each of these key assessments should be embedded in your portfolio. For details on portfolio requirements, please visit the Professional Portfolio page. Activities and hours must be completed at schools representing different grade levels (i.e. elementary, middle, and high schools). Therefore, you should plan to take two personal days during the course of the semester to "shadow" the media specialist at two of your sites. It may be possible to use different staff development days or different spring/winter break schedules to meet this requirement without having to take two personal days.
Practicum Formula: 10 hrs (Planning Practicum Activities) + 90 hrs (Practicum under Supervision) + 50 hrs (Completion of Key Assessments) = 150 hrs
