Frequently Asked Questions
Q. Can I enroll in FRIT 7734 or FRIT 7765 if I still have one or two classes left to take?
A. All required courses must be completed before you can enroll in practicum. Please contact the SLM program director for more information.
Q. Can I take another class at the same time as FRIT 7734 or FRIT 7765?
A. Again, all required courses must be completed before you can enroll in practicum. Although not advisable, an elective can be taken during the practicum semester. Please contact the SLM program director for more information.
Q. Can my primary site be the same as the school I currently teach in?
A. If possible, it is best to go with a different library media center so that you can more fully experience a true library media perspective. In addition, you will need to secure two additional practicum sites for a variety of grade levels. However, candidates are encouraged to secure practicum sites within the school system they are currently employed by.
Q. How am I assigned my practicum site?
A. It is the candidate's responsibility to secure a primary and two secondary practicum sites. IF YOU ARE NOT CURRENTLY EMPLOYED BY THE SCHOOL SYSTEM YOU WILL BE COMPLETING YOUR PRACTICUM IN, please download the Graduate Field Placement Request Form and follow the directions within. It is in your best interest to complete and turn in this form the semester before you enroll in practicum.
Q. Can I complete my practicum hours in a short time span, say in three weeks?
A. This is not a good idea. Consider the school library media center that will be hosting you. It is very time consuming and draining to host and train a practicum candidate in a condensed amount of time. You may miss out on opportunities to attend or help out with events or collaborate on certain instructional projects. Instead, invest in a rewarding Practicum experience. This time is invaluable for your development as a future school library media specialist.
